Call for Academic Director for the PHH-O

UBC Okanagan established the Public Humanities Hub Okanagan (PHH-O) in 2019 to provide support for collaborative research among humanists on the Okanagan campus; to complement the recently established PHH on the Vancouver campus; and to highlight and develop public-facing research in the Humanities in the community. The PHH is made possible through funding for a three-year pilot from the offices of the Provost and VP Academic and the VP Research and Innovation, with the possibility of renewal for a further three years.

The Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences invite applications for the position of Academic Director, Public Humanities Hub Okanagan. This position is open to tenured faculty members in Humanities subjects and staff members with advanced degrees in the Humanities at UBC-Okanagan.

The Academic Director will play an important role in the implementation and development of the PHH-O. An accomplished researcher with experience in collaborative projects and public humanities, the Academic Director will pursue a rigorous and inclusive approach. With the support of a steering committee from different disciplines and Faculties, the Academic Director will work to enhance internal academic communications and collaborations amongst humanists at UBC Okanagan and Vancouver, and to support public-facing research and activities. The Academic Director will be expected to oversee the budget and operations of the PHH, the adjudication of award funds and fellowships, and other administrative matters.

The position will begin August 1, 2021 for an initial twelve-month term, with the possibility of renewal upon review. The Academic Director will benefit from the support of the PHH Graduate Academic Assistant and a budget for PHH-O programming. The Director will receive a partial release from teaching, or an honorarium in lieu of teaching release should the successful candidate be a staff member or already have releases through other arrangements.

Reporting to the Associate Dean, Research and Graduate Studies in FCCS on all matters requiring a Head’s approval or signature, the Academic Director will also have a dotted-line report to the VPRI and will consult with other Faculty deans or designates, as appropriate.
